Sexual Misconduct by Coaches:The November, 2011, Penn State Universty sexual abuse story is a sad example of a lack of supervision or even worse, a supervising staff who were complicted in the abuse.

As I stated in my book , Innocence Denied: A Guide to Preventing Sexual Misconduct by Teachers and Coaches (Published by Rowman & Littlefield, 2006), effective, ongoing, supervision of school and university teachers and coaches is the key to preventing sexual misconduct. As New York Times reporter Mark Viera suggests (11/6/20ll)that kind of supervision appears to have been lacking within the Penn State Football Program in the late 1990s and early 2000s. A period in which Jerry Sandusky, a former defensive coordinator in the program, is now being charged with sexual advances and asaults on teenage boy's over a 15-year span.Viera points out that although Sandusky's risky behavior was reported to authorities many times during this period, he remained a part of the footbal team as an active coach and adviser. Even after retiring he had an office at the football facilities. Tim Curley, Penn State's athletic director and Gary Schultz, a senior vice president, are now charged with perjury and failure to report Sandusky's abusive behavior. Another example of professionals failing to act to protect vulnerable teens. Instead looking the other way, not getting involved, waiting for " someone else" to intervene, even though they knew, they heard, what Sandusky was up to. As I stated in my book, we need to train, require, professionals to act, and to take seriously their responsibility to watch over and care for our children and stop at risk colleagues from further abuse. Show them how to act, not sit on the sidelines.
